How we started
We are Emma and Kaki, sisters-in-law, moms and founders of Maison Ritual.
The idea for Maison Ritual began ten years ago in New York City, when Emma first imagined a robe that could offer comfort without sacrificing the feeling of being put together. The thought stayed with her, and years later, the two of us came back to it with a shared idea: what if a robe borrowed a little more from the clothes we loved wearing?
So we took the softness and ease of a robe and paired it with inspiration from the more tailored pieces in our closets. We thought about shape, fit and thoughtful details—and created something for those in-between moments when you’re not quite ready to get dressed, but still want to feel put together.
The result is the piece we were looking for all along—and the one we now reach for again and again.

Spring 2016
An idea is born in NYC
Living in NYC, Emma spent hours every week in a cardio dance class. After class, drenched in sweat, she always wished she had something functional and chic to change into so she could grab a coffee, run an errand, or walk home feeling styled, not undone. She kept coming back to the idea of a robe, which felt like the perfect in-between piece. So she went looking for the right one.
Summer 2016
The Search
In her search, she realized she wasn't looking for a traditional robe at all. She wanted the comfort and ease of one, but with enough shape and structure to feel like something she could actually wear beyond the usual robe moments.
She couldn't find it.
Fall 2016
So she decided to make one
She signed up for sewing lessons in a tiny Brooklyn apartment, determined to make a prototype. Her instructor didn't quite understand her vision for this "new kind of robe."
Instead, she offered to teach Emma how to make a pencil skirt.
Baby steps.
Winter 2016
She Gave Up
A few months in, she lost momentum and let the idea go. She figured someone else would eventually make it.
Spring 2025
Almost a decade later, the idea returns
Working from home as a mom of two young boys, Emma realized she wasn't reaching for the clothes that once made her feel like herself. She defaulted to what was easiest (yoga pants and sweatsuits) and while quite comfortable, something was missing.
And the robe idea returned.
What if a robe could feel as comfortable as the ones she already owned, but make her feel a little more dressed, a little more put together, and ready for whatever came next?
Summer 2025
Enter Kaki
This time, Emma brought the idea to her sister-in-law Kaki—a fellow mom, business owner and the kind of creative partner willing to ask exactly the right questions.
Together, they began turning a decade-old idea into Maison Ritual, spending nearly a year refining the fabric, fit and functional details.
It turns out making a robe look and feel effortless takes quite a lot of effort.
Spring 2026
The unofficial test
While wearing an early sample in a hotel lobby, Emma ordered a coffee. The barista looked at her and said, “You look cute,” with the slightly confused expression of someone who wasn’t quite sure whether she was wearing a robe.
That reaction told them everything.
Summer 2026
Maison Ritual Launches
Ten years, countless fittings and one unfinished pencil skirt later, Maison Ritual launched with two silhouettes, three colors and a fresh take on the everyday robe.
